The Complete Fairy Tales of the Brothers Grimm

Perhaps no other stories possess as much power to enchant, delight, and surprise as those penned by the immortal Brothers Grimm. Now, in the new, expanded third edition, renowned scholar and folklorist Jack Zipes has translated all 250 tales collected and published by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm, plus twenty-nine rare tales omitted from the original German edition, as well as narratives uncovered in the brothers’ letters and papers.

Truly the most comprehensive translation to date, this critically acclaimed edition recaptures the fairy tales as the Brothers Grimm intended them to be: rich, stark, spiced with humor and violence, resonant with folklore and song.

One of the world’s experts on children’s literature, Jack Zipes is a professor of German at the University of Minnesota and is the author of numerous books on folklore and fairy tales.

I have no respect for the Grimm brothers. Some of their stories are okay, but they are not at all morally correct. “The Peasant in Heaven” about a poor peasant & a great man who are waiting to get into heaven & Saint Peter lets the great man in & leaves the peasant at the gate. The peasant from outside hears singing & festivities & patiently waits until Saint Peter lets him in. Everybody welcomes the peasant w/ affection, but nobody sings for him or anything so he asks why & Saint Peter tells him that “a rich man like this does not come more than once in a hundred years!” WHAT THE???? How STUPID! Wealth has NOTHING to do w/ character! What sort of message is this to show kids in fairy tales? That if you’re rich then you get received into heaven w/ much more joy?!

Another cruel one:
“Eve’s Various Children” where Adam & Eve are kicked out of paradise & God is visiting them & they have all these kids. Some are beautiful & others are ugly. So Eve hides all the ugly ones & the pretty ones are lined up in a row for God to see. Then God bestows upon each a blessing such as they’ll be a king, or a prince, a merchant, or a learned man. Eve sees this and thought that He would do the same for her ugly kids. Then God says to the ugly kids that they’re going to be peasants, shoemakers, errand-boys, & to one he says, “Thou a scullion all the days of thy life.” How evil! As Leo Tolstoy once said, “It is amazing how complete is the delusion that beauty is goodness.” How dumb these stupid authors were to put this story in!! That goes against the teachings of the Bible to favor someone who is more beautiful than one who is ugly. Brains & characters don’t go along w/ looks. UGH, THESE STORIES ARE SO STUPID!

Putting aside the content of these stories, they are very poorly written. There’s so much repitition. The characters say the same lines over and over again. It’s so easy to predict what’s going to happen & a lot of endings have cruel & unusual punishments for minor offenses. They even contradict themselves by having someone RICH & UGLY, but they’re supposed to be evil. And then the good guys are POOR & BEAUTIFUL. How twisted, huh? I hope the ratings for these stories will suffer. They’re not even for kids. They’re just dumb & gruesome. The Grimm brothers seemed to have a thing for cutting people’s heads off at the end.

Unless you’re Stupid Hans you’re probably too clever to accomplish the task of getting the treasure, the kingdom, the woman or the point of these stories. With over 200 tales you must have the stamina to read these ofttimes repetitive tales with predictable kings and queens and dwarves and giants and castles. But don’t let the repetition cast a spell over you and put you to sleep. Take each story one step at a time and don’t worry whether you’ll finish the daunting task before the evil witch comes to punish you. Do what your friends the animals tell you–listen to your feelings. Then you will come to see where the values lay in these bizarre and often grim tales. Then you too will understand that Stupid Hans isn’t so stupid

This is a very interesting collection of fairy tales. It has the popular forms and ones that I’ve never even herd about.
I found the omitted tales thrilling and very disturbing. It amuses me how scholars and historians say that fairy tales are damaging to children.
When modern day writting is much more sever.

design of book is very poor–pictures totally unclear and print is crowded making it impossible to focus on the story. The translations are not bad but there is no effort to organize the material and put it in context

I do like this book but I really didn’t think they needed a third edition, when the second one is perfectly fine.
This is the book to get for these classic wonderful fairy tales that we all have grown up with.
There the few stories that many people know all over the world and something that we all can enjoy, no matter how old we get.
