How to Find Flower Fairies
While this is a pretty little pop-up book, it’s clear from the illustrations that Cecily Barker had nothing to do with it. Her old drawings from the 1930’s were cut out and pasted onto someone else’s modern woodland drawings. Ms. Barker wrote poems about fairies, and there are no poems in this book. It seems that someone wanted to make some money off her name.
That said, it is a pretty pop-up book. But I would recommend that you avoid this and buy the original Flower Fairies books, if you can find them.

How to Find Flower Fairies
This book is produced from the illustrations and text of Cicely Mary Baker (from England, 1895-1973). The book is large format (~11.5″ x 10″). The sturdy pages are richly and fully colored and have a scrap-bookesque feel. There are seven spreads, all of which have some sort of interactive element.
The first spread opens with a letter from Cicely explaining that her research shows there are five places where fairies make their homes; a small photo album is puruseable. The next pages cover the five places: In the Tree Tops, The Forest Floor, In the Garden, By the Wayside, and The Marsh. All of the spreads have pop-ups that show the environment described with fairies hidden about. The pop-ups either jump high of the page or encompass almost the entire page. Also, they all have at least one other element such as a puruseable booklet, a flip-the-flap, or a telescoping viewer. The last spread has another note from Cicely explaining she has captured a fairy with her camera; there is a bit of newspaper with a headline about the photo and a pop-up view camera with an animated fairy. The padded cover also has one of these animated images.
From a paper-engineering perspective, the pop-ups in this book are spectacular and varied. They aren’t simply different pictures and shape popping up in the same way. On one page they fold out in an accordian fashion, on another they pop vertically, and on another they spring slightly to create depth within the page. All pages open and close with easy.
The text is mostly presented in a cursive font, which I found easy enough to read, but might present a challenge to a young reader. The content is fun. Each spread has the main explanation of the place to find fairies and lots of additional little tips and notes. Some of the notes help the reader find the fairies that are hidden in the pop up.
I think this book would please a large audience: pop-up or fairy collectors, young children, older children, etc… This is not the book for someone who wants exhaustive coverage of different types of fairies or lore.
The only slight fault I have with the book is that the view camera shows the image right side up when, in reality, it would appear upside down. This is a very nit-picky thing. If they had produced the image the was it really would be, most people would probably think it had been attached upside down by mistake. It certainly doesn’t detract from the enjoyment of the book.

How to Find Flower Fairies
This is the second copy of this book that we’ve gone through in my family.
My mother-in-law bought this as a gift for my baby and from about 18 months onward, my little girl loved this book so much. I had to read it to her every night and of course after six months of her tugging at all the pop up pages, there’s wear and tear so I ordered her another one.
It’s quite literally the most stunning pop up book I have every seen and there are fairies hidden throughout the book - and my little girl hunts for them. It’s wonderful interaction for babies and parents.
My daughter enjoyed this book from 18months to 3.5 years — literally her favorite book that I had to bring out every night.
TEACHES TO SEARCH:
This book has tons of pop up pages (mostely green) - with fairies hidden in different forest settings (tree tops, meadows, flower beds, wayside, forest floor etc). The goal is to help your child look careful for fairies that might be hidden among the leaves. It teaches them to look carefully so that when you say, “can you get X from the refrigerator” from your toddler, they don’t say, “I can’t find it.” even if it’s laying right in front of them. This is a great tool for that.
TEACHES CAUTIONARY TALE:
My daughter loves mushrooms and this book has its fair share of pictures of toadstools so we spent quite a bit of time instructing how toadstools come from the ground and mushrooms come from the refrigerator and how toadstools are yucky. We have so much fun with this book. She’ll find a picture of a toadstool and will say, “that’s a toadstool, yuck, yuck. weeeeee doooooooon’t touch those!” In that shrill little girl voice - it’s wonderful.
For the longest times when we walked around the neighborbhood, my little girl kept looking for fairies in every bush or little hole in the ground. It’s great. So much joy from a child. Get this book - it’s quite literally amazing - you won’t regret it.
