What are the best plants for a Fairy Garden?

I want to start a fairy garden with my 5 year old daughter. I don’t have a green thumb by any means, but I want this to be a positive experience.
Any advice would be helpful.

It depends where you live but I like violets. My daughter and I call them “shy violets” because they hide amongst the leaves. I think this is where the term “shrinking violet” comes from. They are very low maintanence as well.
I also like Maiden hair fern, Buebells are a definite and probably some lavendar for the smell. Nothing prickly like roses - yuck! Pinks and purples are the best fairy colours…

A purple shamrock plant would be fitting. Columbines are easy perennials that are very delicate and fairy like. Ferns are great plants for shady areas. Balloon flowers are interesting too and the blue one is a nice color. Go for interesting blooms and color!

My favorite plant in my Fairy Garden is the TickleMe Plant. If you don’t have one yet, it is a real plant that closes its leaves and lowers its branches when tickled. It is my Fairies favorite magical plant. It grows year round indoors and I place it outside during the warmer months. It has pink flowers and it even sleeps at night by lowering its branches. I got my TickleMe Plant growing supplies and information at http://www.ticklemeplant.com ..check out the video!

Rosemary is an ideal plant for a fairy garden. It is easy hardy, evergreen, and easy to care for. It has a magnificent scent. According to the Italians, a fairy will come out from underneath it if one stares at it long enough, and it is also known as elf-leaf.
Poppies are beautiful, simple flowers with many legends surrounding them. If one falls asleep in a field of poppies, they shall dream of fairies.
Thyme is also ideal and simple.
