What is the best version of the ORIGINAL Brothers Grimm fairy tales?

I’ve found many versions of the Brothers Grimm fairy tales, but really want the original. I love books, but like the original versions not censored or exagerated versions. Don’t worry, I do not intend to buy the book for a child. I intend to read them myself. Does anyone know what publisher/translator has the most true to original version of the Brothers Grimm fairy tales?

I would try The Blue Fairy Book by Andrew Lang

A favorite collection of the best-known fairy tales, drawn from the folklore of many nations. It is the first and one of the best volumes in the series of colored fairy books produced by Andrew Lang at the turn of the twentieth century. Like the other volumes in the series, it includes engaging black and white illustrations that enliven the text.

(The series is titled according to the color of the book. The Blue Fairy Book, The Green Fairy Book, The Brown Fairy Book, etc. by Andrew Lang, all are well written.)

Many of the stories have tragic endings. Proof life is not all “happily ever after”.

I can’t give you a definitive answer concerning which is the best version. However, I have The Complete Fairy Tales of the Brothers Grimm, translated by Jack Zipes, and it is quite good and has the unexpurgated versions of the tales.

Check Amazon - http://www.amazon.com/Complete-Fairy-Tales-Brothers-All-New/dp/0553382160 - to see if this version would interest you.

I hope this helps.

The Brothers Grimm fairy tales were changed to protect children. If you the want the original book, it is “Grimm’s Grimmest”. The quote on the back of the book reads, “Grimm’s Grimmest presents the original, unsanitized, unholy tales as they were first collected by the Brothers Grimm.”
